Barbers. Mowers. Creating Conversation.

The Buzz shows how a multitude of voices and professions, not usually brought together, can unite to create
viable solutions to our challenges with land and become part of the ongoing dialogue about Detroit’s future.

What transpired through the Buzz was creativity, entrepreneurship, unity and transformation.

Detroit Barbers and Mowers came together to cut and create original designs in lots to transform vacant land and launch a conversation about Detroit’s future in Summer 2016.

Detroit’s growing inventory of over 25 square miles of vacant land requires many solutions — The Buzz enlisted the unique talents of locally based entrepreneurs to develop fresh ideas for vacant lots in their neighborhoods.

PROCESS

Meet & Greet

Mowers and barbers came together for a Meet & Greet informational session to facilitate a dialogue about style trends and land management in June, 2016.

The Buzz Workshops and Mow & Shows

The Buzz Workshops and Mow & Shows were held on July 11th in Jefferson-Chalmers in partnership with Eastside Community Network (ECN) and on and July 18th in Southwest Detroit in partnership with UNI. Teams were made up of a mower and barber for a work day where they designed, tested and cut creative mowing patterns into lots. Community celebrations were held to showcase the mowing patterns and to continue the dialogue regarding land stewardship in the community.

Celebration

In August, the DFC Implementation Office hosted a gallery presenting photos, videos and profile bios for all participants and celebrate their work.
